We don’t have snow here in Oahu during the winter, we have huge waves! Winter storms kick up the ocean and they create some pretty large waves on the North Shore of Oahu. Every year, there’s always the chance for 20 to 30 foot high waves that are so high, the ground will rumble when they come crashing on the shore. Traffic during this time of the year to the North Shore, from surf competitions, and tourist, will be higher than normal, especially on weekends. So be a little mentally prepared, and time your travel time accordingly. If you book with me, I’ll help you with that.
Sometimes the waves can get too big, and they can wash up over the highway, and even they can force closures of beaches. Sometimes, very rarely though, the waves have been too large and too choppy for professional surf competitions. As they say…”Pretty gnarly dude!”
Fighting the traffic, in my opinion, is well worth it. Check out the pics!
Taking pictures with big waves requires a bit of skill from the photographer and the couple. There’s a little danger involved, because we are getting somewhat close to the waves. You have to get close, but not too close, and time your photo session in the “danger zone” during each time the wave retreats back into the ocean. And like everything, timing is everything, so you’ll need to be patient. Big waves don’t photograph that big in photos. It’s because the couple is closer to the camera than the waves. Trust me, they are much more massive that what the photos lead on to be. Those waves are the perfect backdrops!
