HOW I DESIGNED MY PACKAGES
the story on how I simplified everything...  

Prior to Dream Weddings Hawaii, I owned a small multi-media production company that created everything from television commercials to event promotion. Due to the cowardly attack on our country, the advertising revenue had disappeared throughout our nation rather quickly, thus prompting me to turn our focus more of my attention on a more stable industry…the wedding industry. The move made complete logical sense and financial sense for me for two reasons. One, my upcoming video project (which is still in the pre-production phases) had to do with the wedding industry; and two, rain or shine, people were going to get married.

With my former production company, when we did agree to shoot weddings, our services at that time only included photography and videography. My production company at that time consisted of seven very talented individuals and weddings were rather easy given the large crew we had. But with the production of Dream Weddings Hawaii, my seven comrades knew that I was headed in separate directions. So we parted ways, and I dove into the wedding industry alone facing the rather large dilemma of doing more, planning an entire wedding (small or large), with only person.

Coming from working in the movie industry, then calling the shots for my own production house, was not a large move for me. The "wedding" productions were just as easy, even easier since we didn't have to deal with union members. But facing the notion of coordinating an entire wedding, and shooting the video and photography for a wedding, on my own, intimidated me. There were so many moving parts involved, and everything had to go perfectly. There were no “re-takes” with weddings. But there had to be a way.

I realized that most of the other wedding companies out there on the web were also one-man shows. I studied what they did, and mostly what they did wrong. First off, I knew that hands down, I could beat the quality of their photography and video. That was not a problem. I then looked at their packages, and knew that threw my production connections, I could get limo services, weddings singers, ministers, you name it. But how would I piece it all together?

Copying my competitors, I quickly put together packages like those found on their websites, and with my website fully up and running, I began to get inquiries. But as my phone rang, and I talked to my couples, I found out that they didn't want a lot of the extras in each package. They didn't need the limo, the cake, the Champaign toast, or a fancy koa album for their photos. What was important to my brides were great photos, and a minister who would make their service memorable.

I asked myself, “Could I even fathom of creating minister-photography only packages?”

A week passed, more inquiries came in, with not one single bride booking with me. They loved my photos, but again, they told me, they didn't need the extras.

Soon after I had a lunch with a close high school friend of mine who worked at the Sheraton catering department and she handled all of the wedding inquiries. She told me, that most of her wedding inquiries only wanted the basic necessities, and that if I were to change my packages to fit what the market wanted, I would basically be getting a huge share. I was reluctant to agree with her, but my friend knew what she was talking about.

I immediately went back to my office and created three packages: the patriot package, the eloping package, and the ceremony package. They included only the basics, minister-photography or minister, photography, video services. Everything else would be a la carte. Then as if lightning struck, I started booking weddings.

So it's pretty close to the beginning of my company that I've had these packages. They vary a little. All of them include the basics of what is need to get married. And yes, they do include the so called “marriage license processing” service (which is actually just added on to raise the price of a package for my competitors, learn more about this in my marriage license article).

I can perform these packages anywhere, any beach, you name it. I even went to as far as Wisconsin , Arizona , and New York to perform these packages! You pay for my travel fees, I'll basically go anywhere… But yes, any beach, any island, I'm there.
