Rich and Jacqui's Maui Wedding!
Sunset in Maui!JACQUI GETS RICH IN MAUIThe Maui Wedding of Rich and Jacqui Rich and Jacqui inquired with me two weeks before their proposed wedding date in Maui. I quickly told them that while two weeks seemed "last minute" to many companies, it was rather a.o.k. for me. While most of my clients book me 6 months to a year in advance, I've gotten wedding couples who booked my services 2 hours before their wedding. So to me, Rich and Jacquie's so called "last minute" inquiry, really was a walk in the park for me.
Rich and Jacqui wanted to get married in Maui. That was not a problem for me. I love Maui for one reason, Krispy Kreme. They just had to pay for my travel and donuts and I was ready to rock-n-roll. They had booked a minister on Maui, so they would just book my photo and video services, a la carte. That was the plan, and it was perfect.
"Krispy Kreme here I come!" I yelled.
At the beach near Makena Cove on MauiSince I was headed off island, I wanted to pack extremely light. Even though I was supplying both photo and video services, I had a pretty good feeling I could pack everything into a camera bag that literally measured 10 inches in length. For the trip, I packed my hand-held 3 chip CCD camcorder (which fit into my palm), wireless mics, and my trusty snapshot G10. I threw in my light meter, just in case I needed it, a book to read, and I was ready to go. This was probably the lightest I had ever traveled for a wedding, and I was confident that my choice in equipment would not jeopardize any quality at all.
The perfect sunset, with the perfect coupleCamera technology is a lot like cell phone technology. It gets better and smaller with time. Just five years ago, the best pro-sumer video camera on the market was the Canon XL2. The Canon XL2 measured two feet in length and weighed about 10 lbs. Now you can get a camera that shoots better quality, and one that fits into the palm of your hand. Two years ago, digital SLRS hit the market, and everyone had to buy one, including myself. They shot at a whopping 8 mega pixels. Now, the Canon G10 picture quality is so high (15 mega pixels), it can be compared to high end medium format digital cameras, and this camera can literally fit into your pocket. Photojournalist use the Canon G10, as one of their primary tools to capture images ( click here to read about it) . I always integrate the use of the G10 at my weddings.
Special effects shot on the Canon G10. Gotta love that camera.Rich and Jacqui's love story began at work. They took a liking to each other rather quickly, and after just four months of dating, they moved in which other. Rich joked with me saying "I couldn't shake her off" and Jacqui said "I couldn't get rid of him." The newlyweds chemistry was quite apparent when they had first inquired. Simply stated, they were fun from the time they first inquired, to when I said my goodbyes after the ceremony. And you know what, that energy, that "fun-ness" transferred into some really great pictures.
Also another beach that I have no idea what the name is. Second make-out shot of the day. When I perform weddings on Maui, I usually head to a small beach called Makena Cove. It's a nice little cove tucked away between two multi-million dollar mansions near Kihei. It's probably one of the more popular weddings spots on the island, as there are not many other great beaches to get married at on Maui. Most of the time, it's not that crowded. But that day would be different.
Rich and Jacqui were gettingmarried on July 8, 2009. I didn't realize it until that day, but Rich and Jacqui were tying the knot on 7-8-09, one of those popular wedding days. And boy, did it live up to its name. On the day of their wedding, there were 4 or 5 weddings at Makena cove at sunset! And to make things worse, a few locals showed up to fish! The local fishermen pulled their lines across the cove, making it literally impossible to get a clean shot for their wedding.
I quickly told Rich and Jacqui that we should head to a beach nearby to take some photos. Photographic wise, it just wasn't working there. They put their trust in me, and we walked up the street to find a beach that was secluded, and great for pictures. After we were done taking pictures, we headed back to Makena Cove to meet the minister, Reverand Tino. The sun was coming down, so we had to make a quick decision on where to go.
Rev. Tino blows the con shell to start Rich and Jacqui's ceremony Jacqui "said" she was okay with getting married at Makena Cove, despite it being crowded. Rich was okay with anything Jacqui wanted. But I could tell that Makena Cove was not what they had envisioned. I was 100% sure that this was not what they had imagined getting married on Maui would be like. I'm sure they wanted a secluded beach, and to say their "I do's" at sunset in the perfect island romantic setting.
This was far from a romantic setting.
I made the executive decision to change beaches for them. "We're moving", I said.
Rich and Jacqui tying the knot. Reverend Tino sealing the deal. I wasn't sure what beach we went to...but it was nice.Reverend Tino took us to a beach that was just a few minutes away. The location was perfect. The beach was empty, the sun was perfect, there was nothing but the ocean and sand. This was much more like it. Quick thinking, a perfect couple, and a perfect beach, made for a perfect romantic wedding on the beach in Maui. It was a pleasure working with Reverend Tino as well. He does a great wedding ceremony, and like me, he truly cares for wedding couples as though they were family. He even stayed around during the picture taking process to share a few laughs with us. Jacqui, Rich, keep on doing what you're doing. You're doing everything right. Now, here's their video:
