Aloha and welcome to our Recent Wedding Page, or what I like to call it, my company blog. This is where I get to write about my most recent weddings. I'll post as often as I can about each wedding, and a little off-topic wedding blogs as well (Just to keep it interesting). Couples have told me that they love this part of my site the best as they tend to get to know about me and my company more from my postings. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!
Happy Thanksgiving!!!...even though it's Saturday. I hope everyone thanksgiving went well. I know I had a pretty good time watching football, eating turkey, and sleeping! Did anyone do that Black Friday thing? I didn't. I couldn't wake up too early. I heard Walmart had HP laptop fo 389 dollars. Can you believe that? Anyway, personally, fighting those crowds isn't really for me. I'll talk to you all soon and take much care of yourself. Steve
Willie and Laura's Wedding!!
Willie and LauraSt. Andrew's CathedralApril 30, 2005I don't usually do indoor weddings, they are definitely not my favorites. But I can do them if needed. I know there are a handful of brides who are asking themselves...needed. Why would it be a need? Well, to sum it up, 100% of all Catholic weddings must be done in a Church recognize by the Catholic deity. The Catholic rules of marriage, are very very strict. Those who are Catholics, know what I mean. Second weddings are even more difficult as divorce is very much frowned upon in this religion. There are off shoots of the Catholic religion, where the strict rules are little more relaxed. Priest are allowed to get married, but most ceremonies of this nature are pretty much he same, consisting of the same rituals. For any of those who are curious about my beliefs, I myself have no religion, but I am a Christian. Without getting too deep into it, religion or religions are basically man made, and the message of Christ can easily be skimmed or even skipped over, or misinterpreted very very easily. Theologians are great at studying religion, but studying the word of god...They still need help. I saw a Discovery Channel where one theologian actually thought god was some sort of Alien who caught a comet here to teach us how to make sand castles. Now that requires a lot of blind faith, more than the regular bible..haha... I have no denomination, don't belong to any church, but truly believes J.C. died on the cross so sinners like myself would not have to burn in hell. I don't push my beliefs on anyone, and I don't judge anyone. I do though, use my beliefs as my moral compass in governing my life and my business. Okay, so onto the wedding...finally. Laura and Willie met with me about a year before their wedding to "test me out." Some couples do this make sure that their dealing with someone sane, most of all to make sure that the quality they were looking for matched what they were dreaming. Wilie and Laura actually booked me for an engagement session, and if I passed their test, I would be booked for their wedding. Well, lets just say that the engagement session went well, and I ended up shooting both photography and video for their wedding. I'll tell you what's hard about shooting both the engagement session and their ceremony. Basically you, or me in this case, well, I didn't want to recycle the same poses from their engagement session. There were other challenges here as well. Their ceremony location was indoors, and I couldn't use any flash. So I had to use high speed film and I had to open the iris rather wide. This is something you really don't want to do as you really run the risk of getting blury pictures if you're not careful. The other challenges...shooting or using St. Andrews as a backdrop. Needless to say, I thought up of a few cool ideas...got some great shots, and had a lot of fun doing it.
Willie and Laura's ceremony was really cool. It ran a little long, so long I had to change my mini DV tapes in the middle. But there was a hula dance performed by their friend, mass, communion, and the usual ceremonies. After the ceremony, we shot around the property, then headed to Kaka'ako to take pictures. Yes, we headed to one of my favorite locations. I thought we already got beach pictures for their enagement shots, why not get some nice palmtree ocean shots for their wedding. I really enjoyed Willie and Laura. They were a couple I could really talk too. They were also very laid back, funny, and very very caring. Did I mention that those two are huge boxing fans? Did Willie hit the jackpot or what...A wife who loves boxing? That's just perfect. Wllie and Laura, like I told you before, I will keep you folks in my prayers. And keep in touch.
On the way back home....
I really have to stop eating out like this with my dad. It's not a healthy way to lose weight. The Chinese snack, meal, at Hong Kong Cafe was great. I had a Won Ton Mein, and it hit the spot just perfect. I'm not sure if I'll attempt to do any more blogs tonight. I'm pretty tired. Just to let you know, if I skipped over your wedding, it's most likely that your folder is misfiled in the wrong date. As you can see, I skipped back to my April weddings. I just have a few more, then I'm back to May!!! Am I back logged blogger or what! So what's on my agenda this weekend? We'll, I have a wedding at Ko'Olina at 11am, then basically I'm free until the 10th. Meaning I have no weddings until the 10th. I will still be working in the office though :) November and December always tend to be slower months. I actually love the break from doing 1 to 3 weddings per day from May to August. Well, people, talk to you soon!
Sanya and Justin's Wedding
Secret Cove Ko'OlinaApril 29, 2005So this is the power of the internet. I'm actually typing from the backseat of my Uncle Herman's rental car at 12am in the morning. My dad is in the front, we're all in route to snack on a great Chinese restaurant in downtown. It's a cheap good Chinese restaurant, actualy great Chinese restaurant, that you should all check out. It's called HONG KONG CAFE. I'm actually accesing the internet via my SPRINT wireless card which enables me to access the internet wherever I go! On top of that, I am also a user of GO-TO-MY-PC. This allows me to remotely access my office computer. This is the best investment I have proably ever made as it literally allows me to work ANYWHERE. And I mean anywhere. About two weeks ago, I was booking weddings from the lobby in the Venitian, and cutting invoices. Reconfirming with couples from the beach...oh man, it's awesome. If any of you want to be a bit more mobile, check it out!!! Okay so onto the wedding! Sanya actually met with me before her wedding unlike most wedding couples. Her job as a regional representive for Lowes lets her travel to Hawaii quite a bit. During our meeting, she expressed to me her need of great photos because she was a hardcore scrapbooker (LIKE MOST BRIDES). I really didn't have any contact with Justin, her fiance, until the day of their wedding. I love this shot.....
Their wedding went very very well. They ordered the most expensive package from me, my cermeony package...so they the big thumbs up!!! Hahaha. Again, I'm just joking. Cheap couples are fine with me as well! Photographing Justin and Sanya was quite easy. They were both very photogenic. Sanya had those high cheekbones, fit body, that at almost any angle is perfect. And well Justin.... Justin pulls off the bald look really well for a white guy doesn't he? There's not many white dudes who can do it.
They do have a regular smiling photo of this one, but I like the energy in this photo much better...
I really loved their photos, they were by far some of the best I took. Justin, Sanya, I wish you my very very best!
IT'S ANOTHER NON-IMPORTANT POST!!!
Well everyone, Brides in particular. It's 3:23am here in Oahu. And lookie me. I updated my blog. Surprised! Boy, was I on a role. So I'm about to go to sleep. But before I do, I just want to enter in a non-wedding blog here for a second. THIS IS FOR ALL MY PHILADELPHIA EAGLES BRIDES OUTTHERE!!
What in the world is going on with my Eagles. We are just losing and losing aren't we. Donovan is really banged up and can't throw an accurate 10 yard pass. Owens is hurt. Our defense looks really bad, and really slow. I'm not sure if it's a good thing for us to make it to the playoffs this year. How long can we actually last with all these injuries. We should just focus on resigning Owens and Westbrook, and check McNabb into the hospital. I believe Koy can do a swell job at quarterback as well....
Actually, after every loss, I really don't feel that bad. After all, it's only a game. If you really think about any sport, it's really a useless skill. I mean, football, you move a ball 100 yards and we all cheer. Golf, we hit a ball into a hole. Where is the life function in that? Now surgery, that's tuff stuff. Maybe we should put that in an arena and do the wave when that doctor puts in that last staple.
Night everyone :)
Lindsay and Richard Winter's
Lindsay and Richard's Wedding!!! May 14, 2005 Secret Cove at Turtle Bay
I got Lindsay's inquiry about 4 months prior to her wedding. She wasn't sure when her wedding was going to happen because her fiance, Richard, was in Iraq, scheduled to return. His return I believed had been delayed, so consequently, so were her wedding plans. I couldn't imagine being in her shoes. She was also planning to move to Hawaii, where her future husband was stationed, and planning to attend our local community college. Somehow, we got into a conversation about scheduling classes, and her trouble to find coherent online. I told her that I would pop into my car our conversation and to pick up some college planning things from our college, which was right down the street from me. I did so, mailed it right to her the next day. A few months passed and Lindsay got word that Rich was headed down. I was really relieved that he was back, safe, and that we could go on with wedding. Lindsay chose to get married at the Secret Cove at Turtle Bay, my most favorite location. Offically, it's called Kawela Bay. There's a huge array of things to shoot by, on, or around at that area. There is also very little wind there, which is perfect for brides who wish to do the hair down, long train thing. The wedding went great, as with the picture taking. Doesn't this place look familiar?
Are you sure you don't recognize this place...
Well, if you haven't figured it out yet. This is where they film that hit TV show LOST. It's a funny thing, when I first saw the previews for LOST, I thought it was the stupidest show in the world. I also thought it was Jurassic Park 4. And I also thought it was THE HOBBIT, because I saw that Hobbit guy running through the forest. But you know, that show is really really good. My favorite character is John Locke, the former handicapped milita guy. Is that guy crazy or what! My favorite show is 24 though. The one that stars Keifer Sutherland. Yes, the documentary 24. Haha. And I thought I had a rough day.
Back to the wedding....
The great news is that everything did finish on a high note. Their pictures turned out great, every single one of the them. And I had yet another happy customer.
Jeff and Barbara Dase
Jeff and Barbara DaseMay 12, 2005Moili Gardens
So where in the world is Moili Gardens? It's actually on the windward side of Oahu. Just to let you know, that's the RAINY side of Oahu. Book this place only in the summer when it's nice and dry, or else you will pay. There is not much I can do if it rains on this side of the island as far as pictures go since the sun doesn't sent on this side of the island. You will get rainy pictures.
Okay, so onto the wedding!!!
Jeff and Barbara were really cool. Or are very cool. They met on the internet! Now before you laugh, or poke fun, let me tell you that over 50% of my wedding couples have met on the internet. I know there are guys who just love to pick up women the old fashion way, in the bar, or night club....but let me just say that there are tons of hot women on the net guys. TONS. And they are the smart beautiful ones too. And women, just be careful, because there are a lot of pervs out there and dorks.
So Jeff was this single guy, never been married, and then...he met Barbara online. They took to each other very quickly, and fell in love, very quickly. Their passion, funness <---if that's a word, is right here in the pictures.
Can't pull these two apart...I did have to yell "No Tounge!"
Moili'i Gardens....quite nice when it doesn't flood.
Taken at the pier. I really liked this couple. They're coolness factor is up there.
Ann and Dennis' Wedding
Ann and Dennis' Wedding May 9, 2005 Secret Cove at Ko'Olina
Opposites attract they say. Dennis, well he's tall, Ann, she's short. Dennis has the moustache thing going on, and well Ann, she doesn't... Dennis and Ann tied the knot at the Secret Cove at Ko Olina. They purchased my cheapest package, the Patriot Package. (Thank's a lot Dennis!! Just kidding. The Patriot package was created for budget weddings :) Opposite sure do attract!!
So this is what cheap film looks like. Now you may say it's okay, but you really don't get those nice vivid colors. It's not as sharp. And I did have to do a little contrast tweaking on the computer to make the colors pop a little more. When you use cheap film, make sure to use the same ISO it's rated. So if it's 200, shoot it as 200. You can only over expose expensive film effectively. I usually shoot all of my film 1 stop over what is considered normal...bascially, I'm over exposing everything. Does that sound like a double meaning? Get your mind out of the gutter.
Ann and Dennis actually did match personality wise. We did our usual photoshoot, but after that we spend a good time just talking about crime. I always love talking to our couple after the wedding. Hey I'm a laid back funny guy. Apparently, where they live, in the forest, crime is almost non-existant. Which means that there is always some crazy cannibal living somewhere in the woods...haha. Either that or some type of land crawling lochness monster, the same one that steals my keys every morning when I'm leaving for work.
O Canada!!!!
Deneka and Jeff's Wedding May 7, 2005 Magic Island
So here's another Canadian couple. I swear, you Canadian's must love our warm warm WARM sunny HOT Hawaii weather. I'll tell you something funny. At one point, I shot so many Canadian weddings, I began to actually pick up their accent. Not the "Aye's" but the a-boots. Oh yeah, that even surprised me. It's a-boot time. I love shooting Canadian weddings though. I haven't met one rude Canadian couple yet. I even shot a very nice French Canadian couple. Can you believe it?!!! Okay so onto their wedding. Deneka decided that she wanted her magical day to be at Magic Island. There was a small mixup in the beginning of the wedding. My minister and I were waiting at our usual meeting spot at Magic Island, and out couple, was on the other side of the park. They finally found us after walking around the park a few times. To be honest, this is the 1st time we ever had trouble find out couple. I didn't help that they didn't have a cell phone. So brides...always bring a cell phone with you :) Their wedding went well. It was a civil wedding, with a Hawaiian mixture. So there was no mention of any type of god in there. We did though include a lot of traditions, such as your usual vows, ring exchange, and the sharing of breathes, which is purely a Hawaiian thing. So how in the world did the sky turn purple and blue? No filter's here. The true answer is "I have no idea." See, here's the cool thing about film over digital. Light, chemicals, humidity, has a strange affect on colors in film. You really never know what type of colors you're going to get, all you know it's going to be cool. You may try for a darker blue, but somehow, because there is a volcanic dust in the air, it'll turn out purple, blue and red, which is probably what happened here. But I'm not 100% sure. Digital picture, well, you'll just get a regular blue sky, dull and low contrast. What do you do then, touch it up in photoshop, and then...you get a fake picture. Film is real.... :)
Magic Island, you know, this location is a pretty good place. It's in town. I can get great pictures here. The sunsets are great. There are palm trees. The cons, well, there are quite a bit of people around. There are homeless people here and there (even though they are far away). Think of it as a Hawaiian Central Park. But it's far better than Waialae Beach Park, trust me. I know you see a lot of wedding companies going there....forget going there. It's not a nice park. If you really want tropical, secluded...you do need to get far away from Waikiki. Around town, Magic Island, is one of my favorites.
Kimberly's Wedding
Kimberly's Wedding May 7, 2005 Sheraton Moana Surfrider
So here's a wedding that happened at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider. This couple, like 99.9% of my couples were extraordinarily cool. I actually didn't talk to her or her husband till her wedding day. Kim's mother, Gayle actually booked everything. Their package was rather large. Other than the usual photo, minister package, they did order a bunch of leis for their guest, hair and makeup, a limo, a wedding singer, and a bouquet. Everything that day, like all weddings, ran a little late, but nevertheless...is was pretty sweet. The Sheraton Moana Surfrider is a very very nice premise for weddings. There is a lot of history in that place as it is one of the oldest hotels in Waikiki. The cons, well, taking photos there is rather tough. There are tons of tourist...and the beach, well, it's filled as well. So getting a clean shot requires escaping to the top floors of the hotel.
I am so sorry Kim, I forgot your husband's name! You folks do look great together though!!
After their wedding, I took Kim and her husband in my van and we actually drove down to a beach to get a shot an umberella shot. The umbrella by the way is a cheap 3 dollar umbrella that you can buy here in chinatown! It's great for pictures and makes a great gift. It looks expensive but it's cheap!
You may not realize it, but this is a very very crowded beach. No photoshop used here, I just didn't get them in the picture.
Katrina and Alan Roberts!
Katrina and Alan RobertsKo'Olina Cove April 27, 2005 Okay so as you can see, I'm way behind my wedding updates. Why do I keep remind you people? Look, I'm a grade A wedding guy, wedding photo/video guy, grade F blogger. Even though I was great writer in my past life, I always missed my writing deadlines. And just to make it worse, in high school and college, I never did any of my writing assignments.... Now even though it's been awhile, I still remember Katrina and Alan. They were a great couple, smiling and flirting with each other throughout the ceremony. They did bring their children along, and there was a moment where their children broke down and cried during the wedding. That was very very touching. The only bummer, it did happen to storm on that day at Ko'Olina. Which meant, that the entire island was storming. Their pictures turned out pretty good considering the circumstances. Katrina, a graphic design artist, even touched up some of the photos, making them look rather cool. I wish you two my best :) Here's a cool camera trick. Shoot your 400 speed film at 200, but develop it at 400. You are basically over-exposing it by one stop. It will make colors more vivid. Even turning gray story clouds, blue...
NOVEMBER UPDATE... :)
OKAY, so I am through with traveling. You know, I only spenT a few weeks in Hawaii last month and, what was I thinking. Hawaii is such a beautiful place, I have no idea why I left it to travel...but I have to be honest, I had fun getting away from paradise! I actually just came back from Vegas (MY 4TH TRIP) and I had a great time, even though I was sick. I saw Elton John's Red Piano Show, and that was pretty interesting. He's a great performer, but the video that was going on in the background was very distracting. Especially with Pamela Anderson dancing...well you just have to see it and you'll understand. Overall though, great show. I also shopped at those cheap outlet malls and played blackjack. At one time, at one table I was up about 800 dollars, with just gambling 100 bucks. But of course I stayed, and ended up losing 300 dollars. I guess you always have to quite while you're ahead. I went to Vegas for my 10th year class reunion. I had a blast seeing everyone. My high school classmates turned their head when I told them I'm involved with the wedding industry. "You're still straight right Steve?", one of them asked. "Of course I'm still straight foo!" I answered back. "Hey, I'm probably the smartest guy in the wedding industry and I'm straight." I laughed. Blunt, hey I but I believe it's true. So what's new for November. GAS PRICES... Gas is about $2.64 per gallon and dropping here. At one point, it was about $3.60. But don't count on it staying that way. Any week, it could balloon up or down a few 20 to 40 cents. The reason, well, we have this very very ludicrous communist law here called a gas cap. Basically it limits our refineries to a maximum markup based upon the average cost of gas on the mainland. Well, it doesn't make much sense because all of our oil is from Indonesia or Mexico and we have two refineries here...so why are we basing our prices on what the mainland is doing. So, we literally get 10 to 40 cent price jumps week to week and gas stations are really hurting. THE WEATHER... It's been raining quite a bit here. It is Hurricane season, but that doesn't necessarily mean we're getting more hurricanes. Because the water around our islands are cooler, most hurricanes break up into storms. So, instead of the high winds, we just get a lot of rain. Never fear though, there are always blue skies somewhere on the island. Even now, it tends to only rain in CERTAIN areas. November-December Brides, you're pretty much safe.HOTEL OCCUPANCY The hotels are actually a lot emptier than the summer months. This year has been a record year for our state. I believe they have cleared 2 billion dollars in revenue for the year, which is a record, but still pretty small to Exxon's 14 billion dollars profit in one quarter..haha. I think the hotels should get into the oil business. If you're looking for a good budget hotel on the beach, check out THE NEW OTANI. I'm getting no points for recommending them, it's just a good cheap hotel on the beach.WEDDINGS ANYONE? Weddings are usually slow during this time of year compared to the spring and summer months. Everyone tends to be focusing on school, or family vacation plans, and everyone, including myself, braces for Christmas. Every future or current future bride though, should start planning now for 2006. The reason, firstly, cheap fares for the airlines. Book early, save more. Secondly, if you are booking any paying location for next year summer time, now is a great time to inquire to put your name on the waiting list. Lastly, summer is always crazy, and if you really need to get your wedding date secured now is the time to start locking in times. As far as my prices go...I will not be raising them in 2006. You have my word. I will have the usual travel fee for certain far away locations. But other than that, everything will stay basically the same. I will not switch to digital photography!!!!Well, that's about all for my update. Hey since things are slow, maybe I can finally catch up on updating all of my weddings!! Ugghh..homework...haha. Talk to you all soon :) Steve "The Wedding Guy..."
John and Vicki's Warm Hawaiian Sun Wedding!
Secret Cove at Turtle Bay April 26, 2005Okay so here I am, up at 2am in the morning updating my blog. I have about 30 or 40 or so amazing wedding stories to tell you about, and I'm going to get through all of them. I'm going to finish up this one and head to bed. I have a 8am wedding tomorrow! Yeah, my cousin is getting married and I'm shooting her wedding. And...I have two more photoshoots at 1pm and 4pm. So onto John and Vicki! Now John and Vicki are from warm and sunny ALASKA! I really don't know much about Alaska. I do know there's Salmon, big bears, oil, and that light show, Aurora Borealis, that goes on every year or so. (I heard about that one on the Travel Channel). It's been awhile since I did John and Vicki's wedding, and although I did learn about there love story, my memory fades me. What I can tell you is this though. Both seemed perfect for each other. Both John and Vicki are extremely friendly and approachable people and if they ever did live here in Hawaii, I'm they would become close friends of mine. John and Vicki tied the knot at the Secret Cove at Turtle Bay, or Kawela Bay. We then did the usual abandonded building shots, and finished up at Sunset Beach to shoot a few nice beach pictures. I really like this picture above. It just shows how playful John and Vicki are. It's what many may consider a "Kodak Moment?" Some would say it's a candid shot, but truthfully, it's really posed.
